Cancer is a disease that is feared by everyone simply because it is so common and it can appear when you least expect it. While women tend to get more types of cancer than men, that doesn’t mean that men are completely off the hook.

There are different types of cancer for men. Men get more of certain types of cancer from lifestyle choices, systemic differences from women, and other factors. But this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t get screened for cancer.

Below, we’ll look at some common types of cancer in men. Read on.

1. Prostate Cancer

The prostate is a small gland located in the male reproductive system and is responsible for producing semen. Prostate cancer is more prevalent in older men, with about 6 in 10 cases occurring in men over 65. Some common symptoms to watch out for include:

  • difficulty urinating
  • pain in the hips or back
  • blood in the urine

2. Testicular Cancer

This type of cancer occurs when there is an abnormal growth of cells in the tissues of the testicles. It is most commonly diagnosed in younger men, typically between the ages of 20 and 40. Some of the warning signs to look out for include:

  • lump or swelling in the testicles
  • pain or discomfort in the testicles
  • feeling of heaviness in the scrotum

Early detection is crucial for successful treatment, and routine self-exams can help catch any abnormalities early on.

3. Lung Cancer

Men who smoke are especially at risk for developing lung cancer, as the harmful chemicals in cigarettes can damage the cells in the lungs and lead to cancer.

Other risk factors include exposure to secondhand smoke, radon, and air pollution. Therefore, men should also be mindful of their exposure to these environmental factors.

Symptoms of lung cancer may include persistent:

  • coughing
  • chest pain
  • difficulty breathing
  • coughing up blood

Early detection through regular cancer screenings and avoiding risk factors are crucial in preventing and treating lung cancer in men.

4. Skin Cancer

Skin cancer refers to the abnormal growth of skin cells, often caused by overexposure to harmful UV rays from the sun. The most dangerous forms of skin cancer are melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma, which can spread to other parts of the body if left untreated. Men should regularly check for any changes in moles or spots on their skin, as well as any new growths. Protecting the skin from sun exposure, avoiding tanning beds, and early detection through self-examination are key to preventing and treating skin cancer in men.

5. Colon Cancer

This cancer affects the large intestine and can be life-threatening if not detected early. Some common symptoms include:

  • abdominal pain
  • changes in bowel habits
  • blood in the stool

Men who are over the age of 50, have a family history of colon cancer or have a diet high in red and processed meats are at a higher risk for developing this type of cancer. Regular screenings, such as colonoscopies, can help detect precancerous polyps and increase the chances of successful integrative oncology treatment.

In conclusion, there are several types of cancer for men that can be a risk to our health. Regular check-ups, healthy lifestyle choices, and early detection can greatly increase the chances of successful treatment.
