Botox and Fillers

Injectables are one of the most popular techniques of skin beauty treatments. Substances get injected into the skin with a needle to relax the wrinkles and create structure to the face.

Though both procedures fall in the same category, there are differences in terms of how they work, cost, purpose, recovery time etc. Let’s have a look at the differences and see what you can expect from each treatment.

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable that gets pushed in your skin and relaxes muscles with the release of Acetylcholine. This organic chemical in return prevents contraction of muscle and smoothen frown lines and wrinkles appearing on facial muscles. The substance that gets injected into the skin is called botulinum toxin. It’s extracted from bacteria and botox uses a very precise amount of it. It is one of the few FDA- approved neurotoxins in the US. It was approved by the FDA back in 1989 and has been used successfully since.

What are Fillers?

Fillers, also known as dermal fillers, are one kind of injectable that fills the tissues underneath the skin to add fullness and volume. As it fills the tissues, this procedure is also known as tissue fillers. While botox uses only one substance, multiple substances are used as fillers. Some common filler include Calcium hydroxyapatite, hyaluronic acid, polyalkylimide etc. These are used based on the issues to treat and patient’s age.

Differences between Botox and Fillers

If you want long lasting result for the skin issue you have, you need to understand the differences between botox and fillers and know which cosmetic treatments will work for you best.

  • Purpose

Though both procedures use injectables to work, there are fundamental differences in terms of their purpose. The goal for each procedure is completely different. Botox is primarily used to prevent wrinkles caused by muscle contraction. So, when botox is injected under the skin, it interferes with the nerve signal in that area. As a result, the muscle gets frozen, contraction stops and existing wrinkles either get softened or diminish.

On the other hand, there are different types of fillers and each can deal with different issues in your lips, face, cheek, eyelids and other places. Fillers primarily work with volume loss at these areas by injecting substances to recover the lost volume.

  • Preparation

As a part of the preparation for botox treatments, the provider may ask you to stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and other supplementary medications. These drugs can promote blood flow, resulting in side effects to appear.

Preparing for fillers doesn’t take any major change to the daily routine either. Avoiding smoking, drinking, blood thinners and skin care products may be recommended by the provider.

  • Duration

Botox procedures take very little time compared to other non-invasive treatments. First, your provider will go over the botox injection site(Here it means the areas where botox will be injected). Botox injection only takes about 15 minutes to apply and most patients don’t feel any discomfort during the procedure.

The areas where fillers will be applied get massaged first before injections. Depending on the size of the area being treated, the whole procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Side effects

Botox is widely considered as a safe medical procedure by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. There may be some known side effects like headache, nausea, redness, drooping, dry mouth etc. However, it’s very unlikely to spread beyond the injected area and cause other issues.

When FDA-approved fillers are used by a certified medical professional, usually there are no major risks involved. However, there may be some minor side effects like bruising, pain, rash etc. These side effects go away within two weeks of the treatment.

  • Visibility

Every patient and the severity of the issue are different. However, results may not be visible for a few days following botox treatment. You may start to notice smoother skin after 5 to 7 days of treatment. Full renovation of your skin may show up after 10 to 14 days.

Unlike botox, results of filler treatment are visible immediately after it’s done in most cases. Usually, you’ll notice your skin adds volume slowly. However, the fillers take some time to settle in underneath the skin. So, the full development is mostly noticeable within one to two weeks after the treatment.

  • Longevity

Longevity of botox and fillers both depend on various factors. However, none of these treatments are permanent. The effect of neurotoxin wears off and wrinkle start to show up with 2 to 4 months. For certain patients, botox may even last 4 to 6 months.

Fillers on the other hand last a little longer. Depending on the substance used, dose and area of application, fillers can stay effective for 6 to 18 months.

Which will be suitable for me Botox and Fillers?

When you are deciding between Botox and dermal fillers, keep in mind that both are equally effective. However, each injectable serves a different purpose. So, you need to consider what type of issues you are looking to solve and choose treatment accordingly.
