News: A severe respiratory virus season is well underway in the United States, and the CDC warns that the peak is still to come. Low vaccination rates leave many people at risk for severe disease and health care systems at risk for strain.
COVID-19 hospitalizations are rapidly rising. The CDC has been tracking an increase in multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) since the summer. Influenza activity is on the rise in most parts of the country. RSV activity remains high in many areas,” the CDC wrote on Thursday.
“The number of children’s hospital beds in some parts of the country is nearly the same as last year. If these trends continue, emergency departments and hospitals could face a similar situation by the end of the month. Patients with other serious health conditions could face delays in receiving care due to strains on the healthcare system.”
Nearly half of US states have high or moderate flu-like activity, according to CDC data. For six consecutive weeks, doctor’s office visits for influenza-like illness — with symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat — have been above the national baseline, and they have now increased across all 10 geographic areas.
