In case you haven’t heard it enough, going through eye tests in Melbourne should be part of your annual health routine. These tests are not only important in keeping your eyes in good condition, but they can actually catch these common health issues that you might not know you have yet:

  • Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetic retinopathy is a sign of diabetes mellitus, and this can be seen as leaking blood or yellow fluid in the retina during a routine eye test. In fact, a lot of diabetic patients were diagnosed after they had an eye test that showed retinopathy, and early treatment is key to preventing vision loss.
  • Coronary Disease. A thorough examination of the retina using optical coherence tomography could detect microscopic marks that could be a sign of an eye stroke. This complication is common in people with coronary disease, and it can be one of the earliest signs of a heart condition that should prompt further tests.
  • Hypertension. Hypertension is such a common health condition among adults, and it can actually be detected with an eye exam that will see the presence of tiny bleeding or small dilatation of the blood vessels in the retina in the posterior segment. Macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy are also common complications of hypertension.
  • Brain Tumour. A lot of patients who suffer from brain tumours don’t know they have it until the late stages because they don’t feel any pain or discomfort. But a routine eye test can actually help to determine the presence of a brain tumour because of the changes that can be seen in the optic nerve. This is due to the swelling at the back of the eyes caused by the increasing pressure that’s caused by the tumour in the brain.
  • Cancer. Different types of cancers can actually show during a detailed eye exam. For instance, most types of skin cancers can show on the outer surfaces of the eyes. Abnormalities in the interior part of the eye can also be a sign of leukaemia, and advanced stages of breast cancer can spread in the eye.

Whether you’re feeling good or not, it’s really important to invest in regular eye tests to ensure that you are in the best of health. So, if you still haven’t had an eye test in a long time, get in touch with us right away!
