Hyperpigmentation is common in many forms, and it can happen as a result of temporary circumstances or more permanent changes to the body. Either way, dark spots and other discoloration in unwanted places can be treated. Just as you would add a hair supplement in addition to your regular routine if your hair changed unexpectedly, you can use skin brightening products to even out dark spots.

Causes, Types & The Impact on Skin Appearance

There are several types of hyperpigmentation, and the causes change depending on the type. This condition can be localized or diffuse as well, meaning it can appear either in a small area or all over. Melasma is characterized by dark brown blotches on the face, and it can be caused by hormonal changes in pregnancy as well as medication like birth control that affects hormone levels. It is also caused by some untreated thyroid disorders and by drugs that cause photosensitivity in the skin.

Lentigines are another form of hyperpigmentation in the skin caused mostly by solar exposure. They are the ones that are sometimes called liver spots, and most often appear on the hands and face because those are the body parts that receive the most sun exposure on most people. They can develop anywhere, and non-solar lentigines can develop due to several rare disorders as well. Lentigines are an independent risk factor for skin cancer, and they appear brown and roughly oval.

Conditions like rosacea can also lead to discoloration that resembles hyperpigmentation, but instead of producing brown spots, the condition causes drastic reddening of the skin. It can come in acute episodes that are triggered by stimuli or as an ongoing chronic redness in the skin. Redness from rosacea responds to many of the same hyperpigmentation supplements as lentigines or melasma.

Vitamins for Skin Brightening

Vitamin A is the first one many people think of for skin brightening because of retinol, a powerful version of it that has been widely marketed. It is very effective, but it can also cause photosensitivity when directly applied in large amounts, which is why many retinol products are designed for nighttime use. Vitamin C is another strong supporter of an even complexion and a bright skin tone, and it can be used day and night.

Vitamin E is also used in skincare products because when applied topically it helps protect you from sun damage. When used alongside SPF protection, it can help prevent future dark spots while treating the ones you have today. Vitamin B5 is also used topically as a skin brightener, as well as orally for immune defense. It can help strengthen your hair and nails, too.

Additional Solutions for Hyperpigmentation

In addition to products with topical skin brightening vitamins, you can treat hyperpigmentation with azelaic acid cream the same way you would treat redness from acne. Azelaic acid products are available over-the-counter in formulations below 15%, and prescription options are available for those who need something stronger. Check out your options today to find the hyperpigmentation solutions that will work for you.
