Remedial massages are a complementary therapy that aims to treat damaged, knotted, tense or immobile muscles. Remedial massages are used to locate and repair damaged areas of the body and speed up the body’s healing processes.

Types of remedial massages and health benefits

In this article, we will see types of remedial massages and their contribution to health and well-being.

Swedish massage

This type of ayurvedic remedial massage eliminates toxins and strengthens muscles and joints. It is the most used in physiotherapy treatments.

  • Activates blood circulation and its draining effect.
  • Activates lymphatic circulation.
  • Increases muscle tissue making it firmer and more elastic.
  • Decreases adipose tissue.
  • Activates metabolism.
  • Relax the patient.

Swedish massage is indicated in physiotherapy treatments for:

  • Contractures, muscle atrophies, sprains and strains.
  • Circulation problems: varicose veins, atherosclerosis and the lymphatic system.
  • Osteoarthritis, scoliosis, back pain and low back pain.
  • Sports treatments.
  • Constipation

Neuromuscular massage

The neuromuscular massage seeks to relieve neuromuscular pain from intense back pain, headaches and migraines, stiff neck, stiff back and neck muscle injury caused by sports, muscle trauma accidents, and chronic pain.

The therapy works on the manipulation of the muscles, tendons, joints, and connective tissues of the body to maintain balance in the nervous system. Pressure is applied for 30 seconds to problem areas with the fingers, knuckles, elbows, and the T Bar tool.

At first, the patient will notice discomfort, but later, he/she may notice improvement after several sessions carried out by a physiotherapist.

Neuromuscular massages act on the following conflictive points:

  • The ischemia or lack of supply to the soft tissues around the body and causes hypersensitivity touch.
  • The trigger point or points of irritation of the muscles cause intense pain in various body parts.
  • Distortion of posture or imbalance of the muscles caused by movements away from the proper horizontal and longitudinal planes.
  • Compression of the nerves that causes pain.
  • Biomechanical dysfunctions result from forced movements or poor movements in the muscular system.

Deep tissue massages

Deep tissue massage is a technique that focuses on the deeper layers of the neuromuscular tissue and is used to relieve muscle tension deep, relieve pain and remove toxins from the muscles. It helps break down muscle injury and trauma scar tissue.

Deep tissue massages are performed with slow, deep movements of the fingers over deep muscle areas.

Tight muscles block the supply of oxygen and nutrients to your muscle fibers, causing painful inflammation, creating trigger points.

A deep remedial massage relaxes the muscle fibers with oxygen supply and releases toxins. After a deep massage session, a liter of water should be ingested.

It is used to treat:

  • Chronic pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Recovery from a fracture, sprain, or sports-type injury
  • Posture problems
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Muscle tension

Circulatory massage

It is a technique whose purpose is to activate blood and lymphatic flow, favoring cell exchange. By mobilizing body fluids, nutrients reach the cells better, and toxins that cause disease and are stored in our body are better eliminated. This procedure will promote the heart’s functioning and enhance the distribution of blood from the internal organs to the muscles and skin, which causes an increase in temperature.

  • Venous circulation

The venous blood vessels circulate at a superficial level and must act from the extremities towards the heart, which increases the venous flow that returns to the heart, improves its filtering, and stimulates the function of the heart valves.

  • Arterial circulation

It causes a dilation of the arteries that facilitates blood flow and the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the blood. It generates an increase in temperature and redness of the massaged area.

  • Lymphatic circulation

The lymphatic system and the venous circulation are in charge of purifying the body. This circulation moves at the level of the skin, and with a gentle massage, it is treated (in the highlighted image).

Circulatory massage should be performed by an expert physiotherapist and is indicated in:

  • Circulatory disorders
  • Fluid retention
  • Edema
  • Cellulitis
  • Obesity
  • Contractures
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Insomnia and stress
  • Rheumatological diseases
  • Muscle injuries

Californian massage

The Californian massage is indicated to release muscle tension, relax the body and mind, freeing us from stress and anxiety. Superficial and gentle movements are made on the surface of the body, and the subject is previously asked to relax and take a deep breath.

It is carried out with the individual lying on his back and down, long movements over the entire body musculature, relaxing it, eliminating muscle tension and painful discomfort. It takes place for an hour or an hour and a half.It is perfect for removing stiffness, cramps, and muscle aches typical of stress.
