Key Points:

The liver disease progresses slowly and silently, with symptoms appearing only in the advanced stages.

An MRI scan is the best imaging procedure for the early detection and prognosis of liver diseases such as liver cancer, fatty liver, liver cirrhosis, etc.

The liver MRI scan procedure takes from 10 to 30 minutes.

About The MRI Liver Scan

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) liver scan is an imaging procedure that helps detect various kinds of liver disorders such as hepatitis, hemochromatosis, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and fatty liver disease. It uses a strong magnet and radio waves to produce clear images of the inside of the liver and provides detailed information about the flow of blood and liver disorders. It doesn’t only detect the tumour in the liver but also provides information on whether the tumour is benign or cancerous.

Why Have An MRI Liver Scan?

There are various diagnostic tests to diagnose liver-related problems. But when the problems are not shown clearly through the blood tests, an MRI liver scan is chosen. It is a reliable imaging technique that helps in detecting liver-related issues and planning successful treatment.

Because liver problems manifest symptoms at an advanced stage, this imaging procedure is also recommended for patients who exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Appetite loss
  • Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Jaundice

How do I prepare for an MRI liver scan?

To avoid complications, you must follow the safety checklist provided by the doctor before having an MRI Liver Scan.

Don’t wear any jewelry or metallic objects as they may interfere with the magnetic fields and affect the result.

If you have any metallic implants such as a pacemaker, artificial joints, prostheses, dentures, hearing aids, etc. in your body, then inform the technologist before the procedure.

If you are claustrophobic or afraid of narrow spaces, then inform the technologist.

In the case of MRI with contrast, contrast dye is given before the scanning procedure. It may cause allergic reactions, so if you are allergic to anything, then please inform your doctor.

If you are breastfeeding or pregnant precautionary measures can be taken.

What Is The Procedure For A Liver MRI Scan?

Knowing about the procedure for a liver MRI scan helps in relieving stress. The information below provides detailed information on the process that happens in the scanning room.

The technologist asks you to lie on a flat and narrow table attached to the doughnut-shaped scanner and gives you a headphone to use during the scanning procedure.

You may be given contrast dye through the IV line into a vein in your arm if advised by your qualified doctor to see the organ and structure clearly for abnormalities.

During the scan, you need to lie still and straight, and after setting your position on the table, the technologist leaves the room and goes to another room to operate the scanner.

The technician slides your table into the scanner, the scanning procedure starts, and the scanner starts taking pictures. During the scanning procedure, the technologist may instruct you through the intercom to hold your breath for a few seconds.

You may hear loud voices, so you are advised to use headphones.

Once the scanning procedure is over, the technologist slides you out of the scanning machine and removes the cannula if contrast dye is administered.

How Long Does A Liver MRI Scan Take?

The MRI liver scan takes around 15 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on the requirements of the images as well as the administration of the contrast dye.

What Is The Cost Of A Liver MRI Scan?

The MRI Cost of liver scans is around Rs. 4500 to Rs. 9,000, depending on the location of the diagnostic center as well as the technology used by the diagnostic center.

Conclusion

Early detection of liver-related issues empowers you to take full control of your liver’s health. The liver MRI aids in obtaining treatment for successfully reversing and preventing the problem. The doctor determines the best treatment for liver problems based on the results of your procedure. For further details, you can visit our website also.
