When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, we often tend to center our goals around our physical health. Be honest – how many times have you resolved that this is the year you’ll finally shed that excess weight?

But in terms of making 2024 your year – there are other important goals we should all consider. We would argue that the most important one is keeping your mental health in shape! The best part? Focus on maintaining your emotional well-being, and your other resolutions will naturally fall into place.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Educate Yourself: What Does it Mean to Have Good Mental Health?
  • 2. Focus on Holistic Wellbeing: How Physical and Mental Health Go Hand in Hand
  • 3. Learn the Art of Self-Care: Develop Strategies to Look After Yourself Better
  • 4. Strengthen Your Social Connections: Why it’s Essential to Have an Active Social Life
  • 5. Cultivate Your Hobbies: Learning to Do Things ‘Just for Fun’
  • 6. Reach Out: Don’t Be Afraid to Seek Help When You Need It

Here’s how to make 2024 your year of optimal mental health.

1. Educate Yourself: What Does it Mean to Have Good Mental Health?

Having at least basic knowledge of what mental health entails is essential. But understanding what it means to actively cultivate a positive mental state is another concept completely. For deeper learning on the subject, consider completing a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling online that’s accredited.

Otherwise, you could just ‘Google it!’ There are so many fantastic online resources that can help you learn more about how to achieve your best mental health yet in 2024, and beyond.

2. Focus on Holistic Wellbeing: How Physical and Mental Health Go Hand in Hand

The fact is – looking after your mental health is just as critical as caring for your physical well-being. Your physical and mental conditions are interconnected, and if supported well, can help complement each other. So, while we are suggesting that your new year goal for 2024 should be to focus on your mental health, looking after yourself holistically will help achieve this.

Rather than implementing a lifestyle of restriction and deprivation, try caring for your physical health by maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise – for the right reasons! Remember – the end goal here is not to lose weight or to look a certain way, but rather, to foster a space where your mental wellness is at the forefront of your efforts.

3. Learn the Art of Self-Care: Develop Strategies to Look After Yourself Better

Admittedly, self-care is a term that’s been thrown around quite a bit lately! But rather than just being a trend, practicing self-care is the best way to give back to yourself, and help you feel better mentally and emotionally.

Some of the self-care strategies you could and should adopt in 2024 include:

  • Update your skincare routine or try an at-home spa day.
  • Fuel your body – avoid unhealthy Ubereats and learn to cook at home.
  • Journal and diarise your thoughts and feelings.
  • Check in and connect with family and friends.

4. Strengthen Your Social Connections: Why it’s Essential to Have an Active Social Life

Connecting with your nearest and dearest is pivotal when your goal is to cultivate a positive mental space. Humans are inherently social animals – and, biologically, we need to be around other people to feel supported and emotionally balanced.

Social isolation, on the other hand, can be a serious warning sign of poor mental health. If you or someone you know is suffering from depression, for example, the tendency is to neglect to pick up your bestie’s phone call or hesitate on fronting up to social activities you were looking forward to in the past. Avoid this at all costs. An important part of mental wellness when you’re feeling down is opposite action – so be sure to stay social, even when you don’t want to.

5. Cultivate Your Hobbies: Learning to Do Things ‘Just for Fun’

Doing things ‘just for fun’ is essential to your emotional well-being. If you’re keen to learn a new hobby, some of the activities you could try in 2024 can include:

  • Going on adventures and checking out your local haunts.
  • Getting inspired by The Great British Bakeoff and baking up a storm.
  • Jump out of your comfort zone with Afrobeats or K-Pop dance classes.

Remember – whichever hobby you choose to pursue, it doesn’t matter, as long as you’re filling up your emotional cup.

6. Reach Out: Don’t Be Afraid to Seek Help When You Need It

Lastly – reach out!

If you feel like you don’t have anyone close to you to spill your secrets to – there’s no shame in seeking professional help from a licensed therapist.
